From High School Darkroom to Directing Music Videos and Films

A photographer and director shaped by light, story, and a lifelong sense of curiosity.
Curiosity in a school darkroom sparked a lifelong visual journey — from photojournalism to international video production. As a teenager at Poljane Grammar School, I discovered the magic of analogue film development. Experimenting with light and shadow in the darkroom awakened a passion that still fuels my work as a professional photographer and director today.
During my service in the Slovenian Army, I documented events and exercises for the Slovenska vojska magazine — my first step into serious visual storytelling. Later, as commander of the Slovenian United Nations Mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP), I also served as the official mission photographer. Wearing a uniform while carrying a camera was an unusual combination, yet it deepened my respect for the power of images.
After returning home, I worked for Mladina magazine and Polet (a Delo newspaper supplement), producing more than ten covers. My time there was filled with photo reportage, exploring nature and the human form through an artistic lens. At the Mark Fillies Photo Atelier in Ljubljana, I refined my technical craft in developing and printing, collaborating with masters like Diego Gomez at Manjana and Dia-Lab. Those years grounded me in the tactile artistry of analogue photography.
The pull of video soon returned. Around 2000, I collaborated with the Slovenian pop band Gimme 5, shooting the video Atlantida, working on the post-production of Flight 777, and directing their last video Mata Hari. At the same time, I created projects with Babilon and MZ Hektor. These early works shaped my voice as a music video director.
In 2016, I studied feature film directing at the FAMO Film Academy (Czech Republic) and at the UCA University for the Creative Arts in Farnham (England). This training opened the door to projects like the German TV series Das Boot, commercial campaigns, and directing both documentaries and short fiction films.
Among my most meaningful works are the poetic documentary ATA AVA, the music video Ko se najdem for Peter Lovšin, and Going Down Jordan for the legendary New Swing Quartet — their only fully directed video and a milestone in Slovenian music heritage. Later, I collaborated with Lovšin again, directing Hard Rock Bife and Marš za mir, which achieved excellent reception online.
Today, as a music video director, documentary filmmaker, and visual storyteller, I continue developing international projects, including a script for a feature film for young audiences. The spark from that school darkroom still guides every frame I create.
